Sixteen concepts for the mark that replaces the lucide sparkle and the chat spinner — filled geometry, single gestures, every one built to hold 16 px. Three finalists carry the full thinking treatment. All specimens are real inline SVG, animated in CSS only.
Four motif families, no sparkles, no scales, no gavels, no pen nibs: typographic marks lawyers already live inside, instruments of reference that find true, point systems where the orb has a natural home, and struck objects that certify. Every concept is one bold gesture in currentColor, shown at 16 / 20 / 24 px on both grounds. Three carry a recommendation.
A plumb line is the oldest instrument of reference humans own: hang a weight from a point and it finds true. While thinking, the bob becomes the orb and the line sways — barely — like a plumb still settling. On completion it comes to rest dead vertical. The settle gesture is the product's promise: calm that finds true.
Thinking: the pendulum sways ±5.5° on a 5.6 s period from the beam pivot while the bob breathes as the orb; the beam dims to 50%. Settle: the sway stops, the orb condenses back into the solid bob, the line hangs plumb — 220 ms ease-out. The stillness after motion is the completion signal.
Blurred, the sparkle is a diamond; the plumb is a vertical drop under a bar. Different axis, different mass — zero overlap.
A gold plumb bob is genuinely handsome — brass instruments are gold — which is exactly why it must stay monochrome in chrome: see the color recommendation below.
Square brackets are the lawyer's own punctuation — [sic], [emphasis added], [2026] UKSC 12. The mark holds a single solid point inside them: the referent itself, cited. At rest it is typography; while thinking, the point becomes the orb and the brackets breathe half a pixel apart, holding space for the answer.
Thinking: the point blooms into the breathing orb (4.8 s) while the brackets — the crisp part of the glyph — stay full-strength and ease apart ±0.5 px in sync with the breath. Settle: brackets close home, the orb crisps back to the point — 220 ms ease-out. The quietest treatment of the three.
Blurred, the citation stays two verticals flanking a mass — rectangular, architectural. The sparkle's diamond has no counterpart here.
Gold brackets read as gilt page furniture — elegant, but they promote punctuation into jewellery. Monochrome keeps the citation working-class, which is its charm.
The matter sits at the center, solid and still; the work moves around it. One body, one ring, one satellite — the AI as a teammate in orbit, never the center of gravity. While thinking the satellite makes one slow deliberate pass and the matter itself glows; on completion the satellite returns to station.
Thinking: the satellite completes one orbit every 11.2 s — far below spinner cadence, deliberately unhurried — while the central disc breathes as the orb and the ring recedes to 55%. Settle: the satellite docks at its NE station, the disc solidifies — 220 ms ease-out.
Blurred, the orbit reads as a ringed disc — planetary, round, massy. Nothing in it collapses toward the sparkle's four points.
Gold turns the orbit into an astrolabe — a beautiful brand-moment asset, wrong for everyday chrome. Monochrome for the mark; the astrolabe idea belongs to marketing.
Each finalist inline at 15 px as the thinking indicator, with the refreshed phased status text (the ~7 s escalation mechanic is unchanged — only the words). Chips switch between the three candidate wording sets; the demo cycles phases every few seconds.
Closest to the current wording. Zero drama, zero jargon — the senior-paralegal register from PRODUCT.md, verbatim. Safe with any mark.
Names real paralegal verbs, implying method without claiming pipeline stages we don't stream yet. Pairs naturally with the Citation and the Plumb.
Leans into the "reference volume" brand story. "Authorities" is lovely for lawyers but the most forward claim of the three — phase 2 implies legal research is happening.
The Plumb — first choice, in monochrome currentColor — with the Citation a close second and the Orbit third.
Why the Plumb: it is the only concept in the field whose motion is its meaning. Every mark here can breathe; only the plumb settles — and settling true is the exact promise Referent makes to a stressed lawyer. It is an instrument, which matches the brand's precise-calm register; its silhouette exists nowhere in the lucide set or the AI-tool canon; and it holds 16 px with one auditable caveat (the hanging line's weight). The Citation is the strongest pure semantic — brackets are the audience's own punctuation — and the safest ship if user testing surfaces the map-pin misread. The Orbit tells the best teammate story but starts nearest to existing iconography.
Why not the rest of the field: the typographic marks (§, ¶, testimony, Re:) carry the most meaning but the least ownability — they are shared glyphs, redrawn; Re: is a sleeper for the favicon and brand moments but reads as stray text inline. The struck objects (seal, hallmark, spine) say "certified" rather than "thinking" — wrong verb for a live indicator. The quiet systems (locus, advisement, level, margin note, exhibit tab, true north) are honest but each is one association away from an existing icon family (focus ring, shelter, seesaw, list, sidebar toggle, compass).
Color:
monochrome. The mark is chrome — it inherits currentColor
like every other icon and obeys the One-Gold Rule (gold belongs to the primary CTA
alone). The gold specimens above show what is being declined, deliberately at its most
attractive.
